The Puppeteer (Studies No. 1 & 2)

Giclee Print, 20 x 40 cms
(Edition of 25 each)

Usually passive and compliant, these studies begin to explore the idea of puppets reacting against their creator. I was interested in getting a sense of some of the forces pushing and influencing the body even to the point of it becoming completely deformed in the ensuing struggle. The puppets almost becoming more distorted the more they oppose.

The figures were initially scratched into large acrylic sheets forming two dry point plates. The transparency of the material helped create the illusion of these vector lines being suspended as threads held in space. The shadow cast through the plates also produced a further distorted character under theatrical lighting. These plates were later scanned to produce smaller giclee prints for each figure and the captured negative space was explored for the Study Number 2.
