Curiosity lead me to play out a visual version of the usually audible Chinese Whispers game. You know the one usually played by children where one person whispers a message to another which gradually gets passed around a line of people until the last player announces the message to the entire group. Sometimes changing in amusing and unpredictable ways through accumulative error and other times being subverted by someone more deliberately. I’m thinking the kid changing a word to a ruder variation and subsequent sniggers which ripple around the following recipients.

I’ve had an interest in the idea of how memories become eroded and change over time and the strong connection with this game seemed the perfect opportunity to explore the theme further. A memory is never fixed and is always modified and altered by subsequent events and down to the smaller scale emotional changes on a day-to-day and hour-by-hour basis. The inherent errors that accumulate within the retellings of the Chinese Whispers game seemed appropriate when dealing with an idea which is always in flux and the unreliability of human recollection ever changeable.

I enjoy the developing of new stories from old and Tom Philips The Humument has been a big influence on my ideas for many years now. Rather then try to cover all inaccuracies I enjoy their celebration and the possibilities of these leading to unanticipated events and the unfolding of new and interesting versions.

This theme appears to have sparked multiple ideas for future variations which will be added to this sketchbook in due course.
